Black, Grey, and White

I came across a photo of some nails that looked super cute and simple. So I decided to try them out. This is the original source photo I found at Polyvore.

I did not have a grey that dark so I tried one a little lighter and decided to add some glitter to it.

I thought the end result was neat but as soon as I chipped a corner it started to peel off in chunks. It ended up completely pealing off in just one day. Does anyone know what I did wrong? Maybe all of the layering was to thick and it never had a chance from the start.
